Biology is a way of knowing and understanding life and how the natural world intersects and interacts with human society. A Wake Forest biology major prepares students for a wide range of professions by developing skills in scientific communication, science and research literacy, and a working understanding of foundational themes in biology. With two degree options, a biology major prepares students not just for careers in science and the health professions, but also for fields such as law, business, policy, and education.

The department offers programs leading to Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in biology. Students should complete BIO 150, BIO 150L, BIO 160, and BIO 160L by the end of their second year. These courses are all offered in both fall and spring semesters. After completing these core courses, students can select from a variety of courses at the 200- and 300- levels that fit their interests and career goals. Students who declare a major in biology should consult with their major advisor to determine which degree program (BA or BS) is most appropriate for their current career objectives.

Students planning the BS in Biology or with an interest in a health profession career should take CHM 111 and CHM 111L in the fall of their first year and complete STA 111 or an equivalent course during either fall or spring of the first year. Students interested in a health profession career should consult a health professions advisor for assistance in selecting additional co-requisite courses.

The requirements for completion of Biology degree programs are those in effect at the time of the declaration of the major, as the curriculum and the departmental requirements may change slightly during the student’s period of residence. The Biology Department may require participation in assessment activities as part of ongoing program evaluation. A minimum GPA of 2.0 in biology or biology approved courses taken at Wake Forest that constitute a major or minor in the department is required for graduation.

Special Note. Students who are enrolled at Wake Forest may not take courses in biology at other institutions to satisfy the divisional requirement.

Policies for the Majors and Minors and other Programs of Study

  1. The Bachelor of Arts and and the Bachelor of Science in Biology cannot be used as a double major with Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, with a Bachelor of Arts in the Environment and Sustainability Studies Program, or with a Bachelor of Arts or of Science in Neuroscience.

  2. Because of the number of shared courses, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology majors, Neuroscience majors, Environment and Sustainability Studies majors, and Environmental Science majors cannot declare the Biology minor.

Program of Study GPA Calculation

All courses that could potentially fulfill a program of study requirement will be utilized in the calculation of the student’s program of study GPA.
