Middle East and South Asia Studies, Minor

The Middle East and South Asia Studies minor provides students with an opportunity to engage in a multidisciplinary study of the history, politics, literature, peoples, and cultures of the Middle East and South Asia. To fulfill the minor, students must complete 18 hours from an approved list of courses. Students may count no more than 10 hours from any of the foreign language offerings toward the minor. Additional elective courses may have been approved since publication of this bulletin. The program’s co-directors maintain a complete list of all approved elective courses. For course descriptions, see the relevant department’s listings in this publication. Some courses relevant to the minor are not taught on a regular basis; others are offered by visiting or temporary faculty.

The honors designation in Middle East and South Asia Studies is a recognition of outstanding scholarship in the area, as evidenced by academic achievement, intellectual initiative and deep familiarity with the culture and peoples of the Middle East and South Asia. To receive honors in Middle East and South Asia Studies, highly qualified students must undertake focused individual research in some aspect of Middle East and/or South Asia studies or study abroad in at least one country in the region. Students are required to provide an oral presentation of their research findings or of their critical analysis of their study abroad experience at the spring honors colloquium that follows their return to campus. To receive honors in Middle East and South Asia Studies student must at the time of graduation have both a 3.6 GPA or higher in courses pursued for the minor and an overall GPA of 3.2 or higher. Interested students should contact one of the program directors to discuss.
